The Biggest Lie...
The Biggest Lie in Marketing?
“Socialismo o muerte”
Amid classic 1950s cars and crumbling colonial buildings...
…this defiant slogan, meaning “socialism or death”, is a relatively common sight on the streets of Cuba.
But perhaps, with the communist country opening up to capitalist America…
…“social media o muerte” will soon be more appropriate.
After all, if a business isn’t marketing itself on social media, it’s dead in the water, right?
These days, you should focus most of your marketing energies on building up a large following on Facebook and Twitter... right?
Wrong.
In fact, it just might be the biggest lie in marketing...
Look: doing ‘free’ social media can be a useful way to reach additional customers – if you’ve already got the basics right.
But the business case is far less clear...
…and concentrating your efforts there is also dangerous.
Because you don’t OWN your Facebook or Twitter followers.
And you can’t CONTROL what access you will have to them in the future.
That access can be taken AWAY from you at the drop of a hat... 'cos 'Zuck' owns your Facebook fans, not you!
It's a house of cards. So instead of gambling with social media, take control of your online marketing...
...with a strategy focused on YOUR own website and assets YOU own.
That means building up an email (and preferably, 'snail' mail) ‘list’ of genuine prospects, whom you can contact again and again.
It means providing regular interesting content that builds trust and helps explain why your prospects should do business with you - and nobody else.
And it means focusing your website on getting people to sign up to that list, at minimum.
